Woodrow Wilson High School clinched the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA) No. 1 seed with a 34-7 win over Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 6.
After cruising past Dunbar, the Wilson Tigers are on an eight-game winning streak. The team hasn’t lost a single game since Good Counsel shut them out, 48-0, in the season opener.
Although Wilson secured the regular season title, the mission is far from over. Head coach Mark Martin referred to his team as “journeymen” because of the large amount of talented, non-seniors on the team.
For junior quarterback Steve Williams the pressure to win is on.
“We know every team is going to give us their best, so we know we’ve got to keep working,” said Williams.
After a scoreless first quarter, Williams put the first points on the board with an 11-yard run in the second quarter.
With Dunbar senior Chrisdeion Alston sidelined due to injury, sophomore Willie Thorne—who had 21 carries for 94 yards—made his first career start as quarterback.
Thorne followed up Williams’ touchdown by scoring on a 90-yard kickoff return of his own. That would be the last time Dunbar reached the end zone that night.
Senior running back Maurice Tyler responded with a 14-yard rushing touchdown to give Wilson a 12-7 lead at halftime. After the break, Wilson took total control of the game, scoring 22 unanswered points to seal the victory.
Wilson senior wide receiver Sean Savoy led the team with six receptions for 101 yards.
There were questions surrounding the Wilson football team heading into the 2015 season. When standout running back Abdul Adams transferred to a North Carolina high school earlier this year, Wilson lost one of the top football recruits in the District.
However, superstars don’t necessarily win games; teamwork wins games. Wilson’s team of journeymen has won eight—and counting.
