Junior guard Keena Samuels scored a team-high 20 points but the Coppin State Eagles women’s basketball team still managed to lose, 65-46, to North Carolina A&T in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s basketball championship game on March 12 in Norfolk, Va.
Coppin State had beaten Norfolk State, Morgan State and South Carolina State in the previous rounds to earn their second trip to the MEAC championship game in three years. But just like in 2014, the Lady Eagles would fall short in the title game.
N.C. A&T took a 23-12 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, leading the rest of the way. The Lady Eagles simply went cold shooting the ball, making only 18 of 63 shot attempts (29 percent) from the field. Meanwhile, N.C. A&T shot 42 percent, with five different players making at least nine points; Christina Carter led them with 14 points.
The win gives N.C. A&T its third MEAC women’s title in school history and first since 2009.
