It was just less than a month ago when the Bowie State women’s basketball team was atop the Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) with a 9-4 record. But the start of 2016 has been nothing but dreadful, resulting in a losing skid that has left the Lady Bulldogs with a 2-8 conference record, 9-11 overall, as of Jan. 31.
The Lady Bulldogs have lost eight of their 10 games in January, including a current losing slump of seven straight games.
The latest Bowie State loss came on Jan. 30. Sophomore guard Kiara Colston scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds, but her Lady Bulldogs still fell to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), 57-55, in a CIAA contest.
Bowie State led, 34-27, at halftime, thanks to a hot start in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs even led by double digits at one point in the third quarter. But they went cold in the fourth quarter, allowing Elizabeth City State to spark a scoring run and tie the score at 49 with less than five minutes left in the game. Soon after, ECSU took the lead for the first time since the start of the opening quarter and was able to hold Bowie State off for the victory.
Imani Heggins led ECSU with 21 points and seven rebounds; three of her teammates added double digits in scoring.
Colston was the only player for Bowie State with double-digit points, but sophomore guard Kyra Proctor and junior forward Robin Head both added nine points apiece.
Next: Bowie State will take on more CIAA action when it hosts Chowan University in Bowie, Md., on Feb. 3, followed by another home game against Lincoln College on Feb. 6.
